A Family-Friendly 4-Day Long Weekend in Broome: The Ultimate Guide

The Family Travel Studio - Swan Valley, WA

Broome is one of those magical Aussie destinations that feels like a world away—but it’s perfect for a long weekend family escape! From Perth it’s an easy 2.5-hour flight. With its rich history, stunning beaches, and unique wildlife experiences, Broome is a dream for families looking for adventure and relaxation. Here’s how to make the most of four days in the area.

My Personal Travel Experience

When to Go

Timing is everything in Broome! The best time to visit is during the dry season (April to October) when temperatures are warm but not scorching, and there’s little chance of rain disrupting your plans.

Want to witness the breathtaking Staircase to the Moon? Check the lunar calendar—it happens on select dates between March and October when the full moon rises over Roebuck Bay.

Local tip: Plan outdoor activities for early morning and late afternoon, and spend the hottest part of the day cooling off in a pool or enjoying air-conditioned attractions.

Getting Around

Car hire is an absolute must in Broome. While the town is small, many of the best experiences require a drive, and public transport is limited. A 4WD is ideal if you’re planning to explore beyond town, but a standard car will do just fine for a long weekend.

Day 1: Arrival, Cable Beach Vibes & Sunset Adventures

Arrive in Broome and head straight to your accommodation in the Cable Beach area—our personal favourite area to stay. Since we usually spend our evenings soaking up the beachside atmosphere, staying nearby just makes life easier (especially with kids in tow).

Once you’re settled, spend the afternoon unwinding by the pool before heading down to the beach. Cable Beach is even more magical in person than in the photos. Grab some fish and chips from a local takeaway and find a comfy spot to watch the world-famous sunset—we done this many times and it never got old.

Cable Beach Sunsets just hit differently!

Kids bonding at Cable Beach

Family moment: The kids had an absolute blast running across the endless stretch of sand at low tide. So. Much. Space.

If you’re up for it, book a camel ride along the beach—a classic Broome experience and a great photo op.

At low tide, we loved exploring the rock pools—they’re teeming with marine life and kept the kids totally engaged. Tip: Bring water shoes, as the coral and rocks can be sharp underfoot. You might be lucky like us and find a small reef shark in the rock pools!

Bonus Tip:water shoes are also handy if your there at the right time to explore the wrecks of the Catalina flying boats from WWII. I wouldn’t attempt to do this with very young kids.

Storytime: While relaxing on the beach, I found myself doing my good deed for the day: rescuing people’s belongings from the incoming tide! It sneaks up so quickly, and a few beachgoers had left their things a little too close to the water’s edge. Lesson learned: always set up at least 50 metres from the shoreline to stay safe from Broome’s super dramatic tides.

Day 2: Dinosaur Footprints & Courthouse Markets

Start your day with an early morning adventure to Gantheaume Point, where you can spot ancient dinosaur footprints at low tide. To truly appreciate these prehistoric wonders, book a Dinosaur Footprints cruise tour or go with a knowledgeable guide who can explain the area’s history.

If you’re in Broome over the weekend, spend some time at the Broome Courthouse Markets (Saturday and Sunday mornings). It’s the perfect place to grab a snack, pick up handmade crafts, and enjoy the relaxed, tropical vibe.

In the afternoon, cool off back at your hotel or grab an ice cream and relax before heading out again later in the day.

Day 3: Snubfin Dolphin Cruise & Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Park

Ease into the morning with a leisurely breakfast and maybe some beach time before heading off for your snubfin dolphin cruise in the early afternoon. These rare dolphins are only found in a few places, and Broome is one of the best spots to see them. Tours often include sightings of other marine life, too—perfect for nature-loving families.

Later in the afternoon (around 2 pm), head to Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Park. The daily feeding tours are both thrilling and educational.

Brave moment: Our daughter was pretty hesitant about holding a baby crocodile, but she practised being brave and managed to hold it—if only for about five seconds! Proud mum moment.

In the evening, unwind at Sun Pictures, the world’s oldest outdoor deckchair cinema. Watching a movie under the stars is a quintessential Broome experience.

Fun moment: When a helicopter took off behind the cinema mid-movie, it added to the fun for the kids (and gave us a giggle too).

Day 4: Relaxation & Last-Minute Adventures

For your final morning, enjoy a relaxed breakfast at a local café before taking a short scenic drive to Coconut Wells (if you have a 4WD) or visit one of Broome’s boutique pearl shops for a last-minute souvenir.

Before heading to the airport, squeeze in one last visit to Cable Beach for a dip in the Indian Ocean or a stroll along the shoreline.

Final Tips for a Perfect Broome Getaway

  • Plan your activities around the heat. Mornings and late afternoons are best for outdoor fun.
  • Pack sun protection—hats, sunscreen, and rashies are a must.
  • Book tours in advance, especially during peak season.
  • Check the tides. They change quickly and dramatically.
  • Bring insect repellent, especially during Staircase to the Moon dates.
  • Water shoes are your best friend for exploring rock pools and reefy areas.

Whether you’re chasing sunsets, hunting for dinosaur prints, or just soaking up the salty air, Broome delivers family adventure in the most unforgettable way.

Great trip ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Great trip. Thank you Shelley for organising. Tours were good. The app made it easy to check what was booked and also was notified when flight was delayed. Recommendations were also provided on what to see and also gave a history of Adelaide.
